FOrmAmLism ARt

"Landskrap IV" Thomas Olsen, 120x90cm - Acrylic on canvas - 2002
He was born in 1981. He was inspired by a Norwegian artist. Thomas believes in Jesus.
This is a work of formalism because of the Line. There are Crisscross, wavy, straight and curved line. Space is incorporated in the back. I looks as if you could reach through the hole in the back. There aren't to many color but it does not ruin the painting. I think the painting is meant to show that if you follow the right path, the window of oppurtunity is at the end. The man represents you following the path. I like this painting because it is like a picture from a book. This painting would be cool to have. I like the dark shadow leading to the light.

Not my Culture

Auguste Rodin, The Monument to the Burghers of Calais, 1889 bronze 217 x 255 x 177 cm Hotel Biron, France.
Rodin was a French artist who is noted for making realistic sculptures. He was denied entry into d'Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Instead he taught himself. His sculptures are very powerful.
It is bronze, but is weathered to a green patina. There are many lines in the robes of the Burghers being led to their exicution. many shapes form the Burghers and the clothes.
This Sculpture was made when the first automobile was made. The telephone was inveted along with the lightbulb.

Emotionalism

Happy Kitty, John Jay Steensma, linocut, 7" x 5"
Jay Steensma was born in Moscow and was raised in Washinton State. He attended an art school there. He died in 1994 at age 52. His paintings represnt things he saw in his life.
This picture can definitely make you happy just by looking at it.The color is simple but the little bit of red makes it happier. The main type of line used is curved. The texture is soft making the kitty soft too.

Imitationalism

Venice Gondola, Italy, Jennifer Branch Original Watercolor Painting on Paper, 18" x 24"
Jennifer Branch creates light-filled watercolor paintings in her studio in Georgia. She began Painting at an early age. She has taught many art classes. Some of her painting techniques were featured in a painting magazine. Jennifer Branch is a painter, bringing her subjects to life on a piece of paper.
This is an example of Imitationalism. It looks as if it were really happening. You acn see how the artist used color to show how the light shines on things more than others. Line is used to make the railing on the Houses. It is also used on the Pillars. Shape is used to make the windows, doors, and houses. Space is used to show that the houses are near and far. This painting was made in our time period.

Catholic Art

The Last Supper (restored), Leonardo da Vinci, Chiesa del Cenacolo (Church of the Last Supper), Milano.Leonardo da Vinci was a genius who invented machines and painted pictures in the Renaissance period. The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa were some of his most well known paintings.
The color is mainly on the robes of jesus and his disciples. The Line is mostly in everyones hair and one the wrinkles in the table clothe. Shape is everywhere; everything is made with the shape.
in this time period, Columbus sailed to America.

Faith Ringold (American) b. 1930 Quilting Bee at Arles, 1991
Acrylic on canvas, tyed die, peiced fabric border, 74 x 80, Private Collection
I know that Faith Ringold wrote books that included her paintings. One of them was about the underground railroad. This painting was in one of her stories. I don't know which one. This painting reminds me of a happy time in a person's life. I think the artist coulld have held back on the yellow. it makes it look too bright. I still like the shading in the houses behind. this reminds me of the painting by Van Gouh were the sunflowers are in the pot. That painting is also very vivid.
